By J.J. Smith. Yellow Jacket junior quarterback Alan Reed completed two 21-yard touchdown passes early in the third quarter to sophomore running back Spencer Edwards and senior tight end Reed Loftis to break open a close game and Rockwall (1-2) earned its first win of the season last night, 41-29, over the Royse City Bulldogs (0-3) in a non-district game at Rockwall’s Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium.
Royse City is now in District 13-4A, after the recent UIL re-alignment.
Reed again led the Yellow Jackets to victory, completing 13 or 16 passes for 167 yards and rushing 16 for 57 yards.
In a game that Rockwall was favored to win, Royse City actually led at halftime, 15-14, behind the running of senior Jonathan Burns, who scored from the one and nine yard lines. Sean Pollock also kicked a 20-yard field goal in the first quarter.
Senior Josh Broach ran 48 yards and Darian Moseley 21 yards for Rockwall’s TDs. Broach surprisingly only ran five times during the night for 60 total yards. Moseley did most of the work, rushing 17 times for 85 yards.
But in the second half, Reed’s two TD passes put the Yellow Jackets ahead to stay, 27-15. Kicker Ted Gates nailed his second of three PATs, as well.
In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs came back strong, scoring twice to make a game of it. Junior quarterback Taylor Corbin connected on TD strikes of 33 yards to junior Oscar Crosby and 25 yards to junior Torrell McQueen.
Corbin completed 20 of 26 passes for 292 yards in another strong showing, plus rushed 21 times for 65 yards. McQueen caught six passes for 69 yards and Crosby five for 82 yards on the night. Senior Elijah Moody also caught five for 72 yards. Receiver Kris Smith did not play.
But Rockwall also scored twice in the final period, highlighted by Spencer Edwards’s 45-yard run. Edwards totaled 79 yards rushing on four carries and caught seven passes for 76 yards. Reed Loftis also caught five for 79 yards.
Statistically, the teams finished almost even. Both teams had 21 first downs. Rockwall outgained the Bulldogs 463-415 total yards. The Yellow Jackets relied more on their ground game, rushing for 296 yards, whereas the Bulldogs relied more on the air, with 292 passing yards.
There were no turnovers and only a few short yardage penalties. Royse City punted three times and the Yellow Jackets twice.
Rockwall will now take a week off to prepare for its first district game Sept. 24 against mighty Highland Park, which squeaked by Sherman, 43-42, last night in Sherman.
Royse City will take on Frisco Liberty in its annual Homecoming game Sept. 17 at 7:30 pm at Bulldog Stadium.

GARLAND – Two interception returns were the difference as Rockwall-Heath held off Garland Lakeview at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.
Parker Wood’s 75-yard return with 2:17 left secured the win for Rockwall-Heath, SportsDay’s sixth-ranked Class 4A area team. Lakeview started the drive at Heath’s 43-yard line and drove to the 30, but 25-yard loss after a poor snap put Lakeview in a hole, leading to a desperation pass.
With 1:40 left in the second quarter, Heath had taken a 14-3 lead after a Jeffrey Irokwe’s 27-yard touchdown run, but Lakeview tried to answer. However, Mario Henderson returned an interception 32 yards to give Rockwall-Heath a 21-3 lead.

GARLAND – Treyvon Green rushed for 125 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Rowlett to a 38-14 victory over Rockwall Friday night in nondistrict action at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.
Alan Reeds deceptive fake hand-off allowed him to trot 14 yards untouched into the end zone with 3:43 left in the third quarter, pulling Rockwall (0-2) to within 24-17, but Rowlett took over the contest after that.
Green’s 6-yard run early in the fourth quarter gave Rowlett (2-0) a commanding 31-14 lead and it never looked back. Grant Bothun completed 9-of-10 passes for 126 yards.
For Rockwall, who entered the day 14th in SportsDay’s area 4A rankings, Reed completed 13-of-19 passes for 146 yards, while also gaining 103 yards and one touchdown rushing.
Rockwall actually outgained Rowlett by 78 total yards, but three turnovers (two fumbles and one interception) proved costly.
After Rockwall pulled to within 10-7 on Josh Broach’s 9-yard touchdown run with 1:50 left in the second quarter, Rowlett responded quickly, restoring a 10-point lead just 38 seconds later on Green’s 35-yard score.
Alex Barriento’s 60-yard interception return 5:30 into the third quarter pushed Rowlett’s lead to 17.

Harald-Banner Sports-
Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath football teams are hosting the RISD’s inaugural Heritage Honor Before Victory Classic this weekend.
Rockwall was scheduled to meet Trevone Boykin and No. 4 area ranked West Mesquite (after presstime) Thursday night at Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium in Zero Week action.
Rockwall-Heath will take on Garland Naaman Forest tonight at WSS with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
The idea for the Classic originated from Rockwall’s participation during the past four years in the season-opening ASCO Midland Football Madness in Midland. RHS head coach and RISD athletic director Scott Smith felt RISD could host such an event at the newly renovated (2009) Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium.
“Having gone to Midland, we thought it would be exciting for our school district to host games during Zero Week in our community,” said Smith. “We transitioned that into the Classic tying it in with our Honor Before Victory leadership program.”
When Smith proposed the idea RHHS head coach Mickey Moss was on board quickly. All that remained was to find a commercial sponsor to underwrite the scholarships to students from each of the four participating schools.
Steve Gates from Heritage GMC Buick provided that commitment. Gates and the coaches agreed that football games and scholarship programs were natural tie-ins with the RISD’s 3-year old Honor Before Victory program. That program teaches student athletes to give their best in competition, but in a fair and upright manner that respects opponents. Finding nearby schools to participate was no problem.
The Naaman Forest head coach, Mark Elam, established the Honor Before Victory program while he was RISD athletic director.
Elam was scheduled to be honored at Thursday’s game between the Yellowjackets and West Mesquite.
The Heritage Before Victory Classic is intended to become an annual event. West Mesquite and Naaman Forest have already agreed to return for Zero Week in 2011, when West would play Heath and Naaman would take on Rockwall.
